Terms of service

Last updated 14 September 2026

These terms cover the MythScribe desktop app and this website, and they describe in advance how the MythScribe Cloud subscription and the Supporter license will work once they are available. MythScribe is made and operated by Matthew Webecke, operating as MythScribe (“we”, “us”). Contact: hello@mythscribe.app.

1. Acceptance

By downloading or using MythScribe, or by using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the software. If you are using MythScribe on behalf of someone else, you confirm you have the authority to accept these terms for them.

2. The software

The MythScribe desktop app is free to download and use for writing, with AI features off or with your own API key. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use it on devices you control. The software is proprietary: its source code is published on GitHub so you can see what it does, but it is not licensed for redistribution, resale, or use in other products without our written permission.

The app is under active development. Features may change or be removed between versions, and versions before the first stable release may have bugs that lose data. Keep backups of your project folders; they are ordinary folders and can be copied.

3. Your writing

Everything you write in MythScribe is yours. We claim no rights to your manuscripts, notes, or tags, and the desktop app stores them only on your own computer. We do not use your writing to train models, and we will not do so in the future without your explicit, separate consent.

4. AI features and your own API key

AI features are off by default and are controlled by the AI dial in Settings; the AI dial page describes each level and what each feature sends. If you use your own API key, you are responsible for your account with the provider, for complying with its terms of use, and for the charges it bills you. Requests go directly from the app to the provider; we are not a party to them.

AI output is generated by a third-party model and is presented as a proposal for you to accept, edit, or reject. We do not guarantee its accuracy, originality, or fitness for any purpose, and we are not responsible for what you choose to accept into your manuscript. The app's cost figures are estimates based on published prices; the provider's invoice is authoritative.

5. MythScribe Cloud (when available)

MythScribe Cloud will be a paid subscription that provides AI features without your own API key, through a proxy we operate. It is not available yet. When it launches:

6. Supporter license (when available)

The Supporter license will be a one-time purchase that unlocks cosmetic extras such as themes and focus-mode backgrounds and marks you as a supporter of the project. It does not change how the app handles your data and is not required for any writing or AI feature. Because it is delivered immediately and unlocks digital content, it is non-refundable except where the law requires a refund.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

8. No warranty

MythScribe is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the software will be error-free or that it will never lose data.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising out of your use of MythScribe. Our total liability for any claim relating to a paid service is limited to the amount you paid us for that service in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

10. Governing law

MythScribe is currently operated by an individual rather than a company. Until a business entity is formed, these terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the operator is resident, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes will be brought in its courts. This section will name the entity and its jurisdiction when the business is registered, before any paid product is sold.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the current version. Material changes to a paid service will be announced by email to subscribers before they take effect. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.
